Lockdown DIY Enrichment Dog Toys & Treats

Lockdown DIY Enrichment Dog Toys & Treats

Who can agree with me that it’s not only us humans going stir crazy during these lockdowns, but also our four-legged companion’s?!

How can we blame them though? Yes, they may be going for a few extra walks each day but whilst working from home has some great benefits for both us and the dogs (who wouldn’t love spending each day with your dog right?!), it also definitely has its challenges, especially when you need to concentrate and apply yourself to your work (often via Zoom)!

I’m sure in many households over the last 12 months there have been a fair share of ripped up slippers, couches torn apart and pillow fluff flying around. So here are some easy and simple DIY dog toy and treat hacks, that will keep your pup entertained for hours, freeing you up for a productive day at work (at home…) while also provide them with enrichment activities!

The Water Bottle Dog Toy:

What you will need:

  • One empty plastic bottle
  • One old sock
  • Two pieces of string
  • Scissors

 Method:

  • Use the scissors to cut the toe section out of the sock
  • Place the bottle into the sock (you can also add things inside the bottle to create a better sensory experience via sound, smell or even taste).
  • Tie each end up using the string
  • Give it to your dog and watch the excitement and chewing begin!

PSA: you may want to invest in some headphones to drown out the crunching!

Icey Muffin Tray Treats:

What you will need:

  • One muffin baking tray
  • Water
  • A selection of your dog’s favourite treats

Method:

  • Add the treats to each muffin mould
  • Fill the muffin moulds up with water
  • Place into the freezer until frozen
  • Present this to your dog and watch them lick at the ice for hours to discover the yummy treats!

Hand Towel Enrichment Dog Toy:

What you will need:

  • One old kitchen hand towel
  • Scissors
  • A selection of your dog’s favourite treats

Method:

  • Cut three slits vertically up the kitchen towel, leaving a few centimetres uncut at the top.
  • Braid the pieces of towel together and tie the end in a knot.
  • As an enrichment toy, add your dog’s favourite treats into the hand towel. Super easy and fun for your pooch!

Tennis Ball Madness:

What you will need:

  • One muffin tray
  • Tennis balls (enough to fill up each muffin mould on the tray) *Make sure to get some tennis balls that will fit in the moulds*
  • A selection of your dog’s favourite treats

 Method:

  • Place the treats into each muffin mould
  • Cover each of the moulds and the treats with a tennis ball
  • Watch your dog go crazy scratching and biting the balls to retrieve the hidden snacks!
